What is the Sons of the American Legion (SAL)?

The Sons of the American Legion is a patriotic service organization made up of male descendants, adopted sons, stepsons, grandsons, and great-grandsons of members of The American Legion, or of veterans who served honorably in the U.S. military during eligible periods. SAL members support veterans, military families, youth programs, and their communities while preserving the values of patriotism and service.

Who can join the Sons of the American Legion?

 Membership is open to males of all ages whose parent, grandparent, or great-grandparent served in the U.S. military and was eligible for American Legion membership. This includes biological, adopted, and step relationships. 

What does the Sons of the American Legion do?

 SAL members volunteer in veteran support programs, fundraising, community service, youth mentorship, scholarship efforts, patriotic events, and support for The American Legion’s mission. They often assist with ceremonies, charitable causes, and post activities. 

Do I have to be a veteran to join the SAL?

 No. You do not need to have served in the military. Membership is based on family lineage to an eligible veteran. 

What are the benefits of joining the SAL?

 Members gain opportunities for leadership, networking, volunteer service, patriotic involvement, access to Legion family events, support programs, and the chance to honor their family’s military legacy. 

Can children join the Sons of the American Legion?

 Yes. There is no minimum age requirement as long as eligibility is met. Many squadrons encourage youth involvement to help build future leaders. 

What is the difference between the American Legion, Auxiliary, and Sons of

 

  • American Legion: Veterans organization 
  • American Legion Auxiliary: Family members, primarily women, supporting veterans 
  • Sons of the American Legion: Male descendants of eligible veterans
    Together, they form the American Legion Family.
  • American Legion Riders: Sons Members and Legion or Auxiliary members may join the Riders

How do I join the Sons of the American Legion?

 You can join by contacting a local American Legion Post or SAL Squadron, completing an application, and paying annual dues. Your Card is Accepted at all American Legions around the world. You can partake in what ever the legion does on a daily basis( Food, Bar etc. ) 

Why should I join the Sons of the American Legion?

 Joining SAL allows you to honor your family’s military service, support veterans and communities, develop leadership skills, participate in meaningful service projects, and be part of one of the largest veteran-support organizations in the world. 

Where is my card accepted?

The sons of the American Legion Card is Accepted all around the world, and is wonderful for cross country drives, there is always one around.

Am I allowed to vote in meetings?

As a member yes you do, you have every right to vote or speak up for/against anything motioned. And you can become an officer, mist posts want to be sure you know how they run, some may say 6 months or a year as a member then be nominated for a Officer Position.
